So, here’s something you might not know about me.
I have a history of quitting and running away.
From jobs that is, office jobs, lab jobs, waiting tables, cleaning houses, health clinics, on and on.
I’m not a quitter, I was just stuck in a cycle of working for others when I knew I was a natural born entrepreneur.
But, a natural born entrepreneur that didn’t know how to make money…yet. Unfortunately, this combo left me in a lot of short job stints working for others trying to just get by.
That’s the worst right?? You know you’re not meant to work for anyone else, getting up with the alarm in the morning, the commute (why is everyone so angry?), then walking into that soul sucking office where you know you’re supposed to be grateful but you feel like you left the joy for life in your house when you walked out the door this morning.
If you’re reading this and have no idea what I’m talking about, this email is not for you.
You’re one of those incredible individuals who I am so impressed with and have so much respect for who saves lives in hospitals, teaches children at schools, builds roads, runs the government and keeps a lot of the infrastructure of society working.
I bow to you.
But, it’s just not me.
One’s not better than the other and it’s not even that I was meant for something “more”, I was just cutout for something totally different and for the most part it’s not modeled for us in society.
That’s what I want to do, give another option for those who show up at their 9-5’s and feel like an alien. People give you that weird look and just don’t totally get you.
I get you.
Here’s where this article takes a turn…
Don’t quit your day job…yet.
And this is coming from the serial job quitter.
I don’t regret leaving a single job, I had to get out of all of those places and off on adventures like moving to Hawaii (for 3 months) and starting a couple businesses.
But I also see a lot of entrepreneurs with good intentions who end up putting a lot of pressure on themselves to ‘make money fast’ and that can take the joy (and profits) right out of your business.
My part time job made starting my dream business (this one right here) a whole lot easier.
Did I want to answer phones in a room without windows all day? No way! (seriously, office buildings without windows should be banned).
But, that side job gave me the freedom to get onto sales calls with potential clients without going into desperation “I need the money now” mode.
It gave me the funds to invest in the most expensive thing I’d ever purchased up to that point, except maybe my car, a 90 day program with my first coach.
That job was the final reminder I needed that I was going to make my business work, no matter what.
I could see how easy it would be for me to make a decent living if I stayed in that job (decent is one of the least inspiring words out there just fyi). I could easily move up the ladder, get a retirement fund and some benefits.
And after I’d sold my first 5K package I still hesitated, “What if that was it? What if I never sell another package? What if I need this job?”
Well we all know what a bunch of bologna that was and how this story turns out.
I looked at my funds, the space I had still on my credit cards and realized I had a good 3 months of living expenses if I didn’t sell another package.
I leapt to freedom.
I leapt for joy.
And I wanted to leap free much sooner but my intuitive coach at the time did a reading and highly recommended I stay.
I didn’t want to, but I did. And it served me.
So check in with yourself…if you’re in a job or doing some part time work for extra income, is it serving you?
Is it supporting you while you’re setting up the business and lifestyle that you truly desire or are you using your job as an excuse to stay in your comfort zone?
I’m not saying quit your job. I’m actually saying quite the opposite.
This shame I see women put on themselves for still being in their 9-5’s or doing part time work has to stop.
Is it serving you? Then use it! It doesn’t mean you’re a failure, it’s just a tool in your toolbox that you’ll be putting away soon enough.
Do what you have to do to get the income in to pay your bills and set up your business foundations.
Use that job to start setting up your website, your email system and hiring the support you need (whether that’s your own coach or training, a VA or a housekeeper).
Then leap, knowing you’ve set a strong foundation for yourself.
You’re meant to fly. And your side job isn’t a cage, it’s a launching pad.
